Introduction

In some villages in Savoy, past and present are well-matched, traditions and present-day realities are well-balanced.

La Toussuire is one of them and life is pleasant. Located in a large sunny plateau, at an altitude of 1800 m, the resorty offers a magnificent 360° panorama.

According to their own joy of living, residents will warmly and truly welcome you. Each meeting being a personal enrichment, we try to improve as seasons go by.

History


In the early 20th century, inhabitants of St Jean de Maurienne used to skate in " les Chaudannes". They soon tried their skill at skiing on ROCHENOIRE slopes, behind the hospital. In 1924, Mr MATTER got these pioneers together and they went to ski on Fontcouverte and La Toussuire slopes.

The plateau was uninhabited except Mr COLLET's chalet.

January 21st, 1923 : 1st official contest for 10-year-olds.

From now on, competitions have been following competitions.

Such a craze was linked to the joint work of urban associations ( Lyons'SCAL, Chambéry's TCAM ) and local clubs CAF Maurienne section )

The FFS ( ski federation of Savoy ) itself got involved in important races enjoying a real know-how.

1924 : first CAF chalet

1926 : creation of La Toussuire

1927 : creation of Fontcouverte-Villarembert ski club to be more efficient, the club merged with Maurienne Ski Club in 1936

1937 was a crucial date for the future of the resort. Pierre COT ( deputy of Savoy ) and Léo LAGRANGE ( Minister ) came to carry out a larger area includind Le Corbier.

1937 : first hotel established by Louis, Michel and Marcel COLLET. It was supplied as seen opposite.

Winter 37/38 : - first ski lift

the AUGERT brothers, Germain, Bienvenu and Félicien established a small business to run it. Séraphin DOMPNIER and Marcel COLLET soon joined them.

Poles didn't exist yet. To tow skiers, thin cables were tied to the towing cable with bronze switches manufactured by PECHINEY in St Jean de Maurienne.

After the second world war, La Toussuire became one of the great resorts in Maurienne. Within a few years, it turned into the large complex we know, without losing its village spirit.
